Disabled adults are at higher risk of being victims of violence than adults who aren’t disabled, new research finds. Those with mental illness are particularly vulnerable, with about 24 percent reporting having experienced physical, sexual or “intimate partner” violence during the past year, according to the study published online Feb. 27 in The Lancet.

For the study, researchers from Liverpool John Moores University in England analyzed the results of 26 prior studies that included some 21,500 people with a range of physical and mental disabilities from seven countries — Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, United States and South Africa.

College students who take oral antibiotics to keep their acne in check have more sore throats than their peers who don’t take antibiotics, researchers have found. But the authors of a new study published online Nov. 21 in the Archives of Dermatology didn’t find any more bacteria in the antibiotic group, indicating that the rise in sore throats, or pharyngitis, probably wasn’t due to antibiotic resistance.

“Those with acne who were on tetracyclines were about two to four times more likely to report a bout of upper respiratory tract infection or pharyngitis or sore throat . . . [but] I can’t tell you why we’re finding what we’re finding,” said study lead author Dr. David Margolis, a professor of dermatology and epidemiology at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Previous studies have also found that people taking antibiotic pills for acne had a higher incidence of sore throats.

Novartis said its drug AIN457 helped alleviate the symptoms of people suffering from moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis, the Swiss firm said on Monday based on the results of a mid-stage study.

Plaque psoriasis is a common hereditary, immune-mediated systemic disorder characterized by skin lesions, called plaques, which can be painful.

Women who spend a lot of time exercising or eat a heart-healthy diet appear to reach menopause earlier, a new Japanese study shows. While that doesn’t prove work-outs and healthy foods are directly responsible, researchers say the findings could be important for cancer prevention.

For the study, researchers tracked more than 3,100 premenopausal women over 10 years. Those who exercised the most — about eight to 10 hours a week — were 17 percent more likely to start menopause during the study than their sedentary peers. Similarly, women who ate the most polyunsaturated fats — found in many fish and vegetable oils — were 15 percent more likely to reach menopause than those who got the least.

Frequent indoor tanners may exhibit brain changes that are similar to those seen among people who are addicted to drugs and alcohol, according to a new study that adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting that indoor tanning may be addictive.

Close to 30 million Americans visit indoor tanning salons each year despite the well-publicized risks of skin cancer associated with this practice. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is now considering a ban on indoor tanning for people under age 18 and the American Academy of Pediatrics is on record that it supports this legislation. The new findings, released online in advance of publication in an upcoming print issue of the journal Addiction Biology, suggest that indoor tanning taps into the brain’s “reward center.”
